BAITS
Baits seen used include halibut pellets, chickpeas, corn, luncheon meat, dog biscuits, boilies, nuts and bread, also hemp and ground bait, they all work. With boilies the best results seem to come from fishy smelling ones as opposed sweet smelling ones like tuti fruity, strawberry and the such like. The fish don't see many boilies and for this reason in my opinion they aren't the most effective baits but I have friends who swear by their homemade boilies.
There doesn't seem to be much need for heavy baiting
or pre-baiting, a few handfuls of freebees around the hook bait regularly produces
good results. PVA bags are very effective at putting enough bait around the
hook to get fish, however when I use it I still can't resist the temptation
to put a few freebees around the bag to lead the fish in. Of course you have
to put the bait in the right place, watch the lake, if you are not catching,
go to where you see the fish. My favourite hook baits are chickpeas and halibuts
with bread for surface fishing, but things could always change and really most
baits will work if you get them where the fish feed.
