DECEMBER - FEBRUARY

The winter rains have come and replenished the lakes after the long summer. If things follow the same pattern as last year the fishing will be a bit harder than when the water is low but the fish should be bigger. The huge influx of water has coloured the water, made it cold and introduced enormous amounts of natural food in addition to what was already available. None of these things have made the fishing easier. The fish's habits change with the seasons here just like they do in the UK and the rest of Europe. The Carp don't feed so much in winter, the summer days get too hot for all living things fish and humans included, leaving spring and autumn generally the best seasons to go fishing.

Some of our clients and I have had success fishing very close in tiny features, searching for the fish the fish rather than laying traps and waiting although this approach will produce the results eventually. A concerted effort over a few days in the winter pays off, it means braving the cold nights, but for those that fish the English winters a night here is child's play in comparison. The only real winter weather here is a proper Canarian downpour. Under these circumstances a very good bivvy is needed and it must be situated well above the water level otherwise a midnight flooding is a real possibility.
