SEPT 2005 - NOV 2005

September was still very hot, one particular weekend early in September a 'Calima' wind blew from the south giving us temperatures in the mid 20s at 4:00 in the morning! On that weekend the heat seemed to slow down the fishing to nothing in the days everything coming at night, but good fish from 24-30lbs.

Since then the weather has cooled down, mid 20s in the days and cooler at night. We have also had some light rain which was quite good for the fishing. On a rainy day trip we elected not to bivvy up and sit behind rods, but to drive round the lake stopping to bait up likely looking spots with bread. We arrived at 10:00 in the morning, stopped between baiting swims to chat to a couple of other fishermen we saw, had a pleasant stroll around parts of the lake fished for about 20 minutes caught 3 fish from 13-19lbs. We got cold by 2:00 drove back getting home in time for the football, what a great day's fishing!

Most of the time though the weather has been fairly settled and the fishing has been steady. This has surprised me a bit as I am still waiting for the 'pre-winter munch' that so many anglers seem to believe takes place. Certainly at this time last year in Chira it seemed hard to go wrong, 4 or 5 fish in a day was common whereas now we are down to 1s, 2s and 3s. Also the fish are still tending only to come to life towards the evening, which again was true, last year but not to such an extent, the fish were being caught in the day much more frequently than they are now. The good news is that some very good fish have been caught most notably a 35lb and a 36lb beauty both taken on pellet in 12 feet of water on a flat shingle bottom at about 20 yards out.
