GETTING THERE
Flights come to Gran Canaria from all over Britain. Once on the island the most people opt to hire a car from the airport and drive directly to Chira. We can arrange transport for you to and from the lake, but we highly recommend a hire car. The trip shouldn't take much more than an hour.

If you are driving there are two possible routes. The first is via Santa Lucia, head south (sur) from the airport on the motorway and stay in the slow lane getting off at the first exit sign-posted for Carrizal. Keep heading south going straight across a series of roundabouts until you reach a roundabout that you can't go straight across that is clearly sign-posted Santa Lucia to the right, follow the signs to Santa Lucia into the hills. Shortly after leaving the built up area there is a well signed T-junction, turn left up the hill continuing to follow signs to Santa Lucia and San Bartolome (GC65 on the map). This road passes through Santa Lucia and takes you on to San Bartolome. Go through San Bartolome and on to La Plata (which is actually GC60 on the map but you wouldn't notice the change). After La Plata start looking out for big brown signposts for the Embalse de Chira on the left.
The second route is via Fataga for which you follow the motorway GC1 south heading for Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas. Get off GC1 at junction 43 sign-posted for 'Las Burras San Augustin' (43 is the second junction for San Augustin the first is junction 38 'Tarajalilo San Augustin', don't ask me what happened to junctions 39-42 but 38 and 43 are consecutive). Follow the exit road round and you come to a fork, bare right signed for 'El Ingles' onto the GC500. As you join the GC500 you must move across a lane, don't follow the slip road down into Playa del Ingles. Stay in the slow lane as you come to the first roundabout about 1/4 of a mile from where you join the GC500 (the outside lane goes straight on under the roundabout and will get you lost). Take the first exit right sign-posted for Fataga. Go straight over the next roundabout and then look for a little signpost for Fataga on the second roundabout (the third exit). You will then come to a roundabout with a big metal cactus on go straight on up into the hills following signs for Fataga (GC60 on the map). After Fataga the road will take you on to San Bartolome. Go through San Bartolome to a little village called La Plata (blink and you'll miss it). On leaving La Plata start looking out for big brown signposts for the turning to the Embalse de Chira on the left.
Drive carefully down the road to Chira there are no barriers to stop you going off the edge of the narrow winding road. You pass through to the village of Cercados de Araña where you will find the Embalse de Chira. We are situated in the last buildings before the dam wall where you will need to come to pick up licenses and any bits of kit or bait you may have ordered or to settle into our apartments before you go fishing.
On the subject of routes to Chira my friend Kenny who shall go nameless comes
to fish Chira quite regularly. He used to use the route via Fataga and got lost
every time 6 hours being a particularly memorable effort. He now swears by the
route via Santa Lucia and he doesn't get lost anymore. It has to be noted that
he's not the only one to get lost finding their way to Chira, most people complaining
that everything goes pear shaped when they get to Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas.
The Santa Lucia route is the most direct route from the airport to Chira although
the road is arguably a bit slower up to San Bartolome.
