THE FISH

The lake has two types of fish. Big mouthed Black Bass and hard fighting Mirror Carp with all sorts of scale patterns ranging from fully scaled mirrors to perfect liniers to near but not quite leather carp (that's if a leather carp is defined as having absolutely no scales). There seems to be a huge number of fish in the 15-25lb range. Although there is little or no management or control of the fish populations to give accurate information bags of 5 or more fish a day in this size range are common place for most of the year. The Carp have been recorded up to 40lb+ in years gone by but 30lb+ is in my opinion a big fish from this lake, but they are there and they do get caught.

Increased tourism in the south putting more pressure on the island's water supply prevents the lake from filling completely as often as it used to. In 1998-2000 the lake got very low, there were rumors that some of the fish died and so the anglers stopped coming in such numbers. Today the water level is much higher and the fish are healthy and growing well. In the 3 years I have been fishing Chira the average size of the fish I have been catching has steadily increased, with 20lb+ fish becoming commonplace and lately the odd 30lb+ fish for good measure. The lake is big with a large head of good sized Carp and I wouldn't be surprised if fish pushing 40lb and perhaps bigger were in there today though I am yet to see one…...
